Accidente cerebrovascular
As a Comprehensive Stroke Center certified by DNV GL, we use advanced technology to give you the treatment you need. We also actively participate in research studies, including national clinical trials for stroke, so we can continually improve the care you receive.
Your choice for comprehensive stroke treatment
The accomplished team of neurologists, neurosurgeons and stroke-cerfified nurses at Medical City Plano's Brain and Spine Hospital are on call 24/7 for triage and immediate stroke treatment. They provide advanced neurological care for both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes.
Stroke warning signs
A stroke is a medical emergency. Delayed treatment can lead to long-term disability or death. If you notice stroke symptoms, call 911 immediately.
Use B.E. F.A.S.T. to recognize warning signs:
- Balance – Sudden loss of balance, dizziness or trouble walking
- Eyes – Sudden vision loss or trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- Face – One side of the face droops or feels numb; a smile may look uneven
- Arms – One arm feels weak or numb or drifts downward when raised
- Speech – Slurred speech or trouble speaking
- Time – If someone shows any of these signs, even if symptoms go away, calling 911 right away can help get lifesaving care started. Noting when symptoms first appeared can also support treatment decisions.
Other stroke symptoms may include severe headache, confusion, temporary memory problems, vertigo or dizziness.
Minimally invasive treatments
Three to four percent of ischemic stroke patients can be treated with intravenous (IV) tenecteplase (TNK). Because many stroke patients arrive at the hospital after the safe time window for TNK medication has passed, we offer a minimally invasive treatment called endovascular thrombectomy (EVT).
EVT is performed by specially trained neurovascular specialists who use tiny devices to remove a blood clot from the brain’s blood vessels. This procedure can help restore blood flow, reduce brain damage and improve the chance of recovery after a stroke.
This catheter-based technology physically removes the clot by allowing the neurologist to use real-time 3D image guidance to clear the way for blood flow to the brain. It also extends the time window for treatment — up to 12 hours after the onset of stroke symptoms.
Advanced hemorrhagic stroke treatment
Medical City Plano offers advanced treatment options for brain aneurysms, including aneurysm coiling and aneurysm clipping.
Aneurysm coiling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a catheter to place thin metal coils inside an aneurysm. These coils help block blood flow into the aneurysm and reduce the risk of rupture during a hemorrhagic stroke.
Aneurysm clipping is a surgical procedure in which a neurosurgeon places a small clip at the base of the aneurysm. This helps separate the aneurysm from the artery and prevent bleeding.
Rapid stroke identification with AI technology
We use advanced AI-powered technology to help identify large vessel occlusions quickly. This allows our care team to review results faster and begin treatment as soon as possible.
Life-saving stroke education
Our neurologists, neurosurgeons, registered nurses, therapists and stroke educators are here to help you recognize the signs and symptoms of stroke.
Knowing what to look for and calling 911 right away can save lives and help protect brain function.
Support group
Medical City Plano's Stroke Support Group for patients and caregivers meets every third Wednesday of the month from 5:00 to 6:00 pm in Tower C — Classroom 1 (near Starbucks) at the hospital.
This monthly program provides stroke recovery education, resources and fellowship to help patients rehabilitate and cope with life adjustments after experiencing a stroke. Each meeting features a guest speaker presentation and group discussion with stroke survivors, caregivers and other supporters.
