Frequently asked questions
Most vascular surgery procedures include arterial or venous bypass surgery, angioplasty, stenting and aortic aneurysm repair. Vascular surgery is often recommended if you have any of these conditions:
- Aortic aneurysm
- Blood clots
- Carotid artery disease
- Chronic venous insufficiency
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Fibromuscular dysplasia
- Peripheral artery disease
Like all surgical procedures, vascular surgery does come with some risks, including bleeding, blood clots, blood vessel damage and nerve damage. Patients with severe vascular diseases, history of stroke and coexisting conditions will be at higher risk.
Recovery time varies depending on the procedure. Patients may spend time in an intensive care unit following more complex procedures, such as aneurysm repair. Other surgeries may require no overnight stay and patients can return home after recovery.
