Hospital history

We opened in 1974 as Decatur Community Hospital, and became Wise Regional Health System in 2001. In 2023, we joined Medical City Healthcare and rebranded as Medical City Decatur, a campus of Medical City Denton.

Following several expansions throughout our history, Medical City Decatur remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering exceptional care to our community. This commitment is exemplified by our decision to become part of Medical City Healthcare, a division of HCA Healthcare.

A start of something special

The Decatur Hospital Authority was created and established by ordinance of the City of Decatur in October of 1967.

In 1974, the hospital opened its doors as Decatur Community Hospital, enhancing community health care delivery and addressing the future health care requirements of a growing community.

When the doors first opened for business, the hospital occupied little more than 34,000 square feet and was home to 50 patient beds and 2 operating rooms. There was significant forethought and effort by community leaders which led to the creation of this modern facility designed to meet virtually all health care needs, either on an emergency or routine basis. Decatur Community Hospital officially changed its name to Wise Regional Health System in April of 2001.

Historic milestones

1982: The Joint Commission Accreditation

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospital Organizations has accredited it since 1982. In retaining this status, the hospital is acknowledged by the premium hospital accreditation agency in the nation as meeting or exceeding established health care standards. This further documents the desire and efforts of the hospital Board of Governors, Medical Staff, Hospital Administration, and Employees on staff to offer the finest health care available.

2004: East Campus Construction

In 2004, construction began in Decatur for a $54 million expansion of Wise Regional Health System, known as the East Campus, now Medical City Decatur. The East Campus opened in August 2006 to add 99 acute medical and surgical beds, 10 operating rooms and a total of 176,000 square feet.

2006: West Campus

In November of 2006, the West Campus of Wise Regional Health System was converted to provide long term care, inpatient rehabilitation, and inpatient adult and geriatric behavioral health.

2014: Parkway Surgical & Cardiovascular Hospital

Parkway Surgical & Cardiovascular Hospital, formerly Wise Regional Health at Parkway, and now Medical City Surgical Hospital Alliance, a Campus of Medical City Alliance, offers the rare combination of the most technologically advanced facilities and a friendly and welcoming environment. The facility was designed with physician input and guidance, thus creating spacious, leading edge surgical suites equipped with the newest technology.

2018: Wise Health Surgical Hospital in Argyle

Opened in 2018, Wise Health Surgical Hospital at Argyle, now Medical City Argyle, a Campus of Medical City Denton, provides residents of Denton County and surrounding areas easy access to a dedicated surgical facility. The technologically advanced facility performs a wide range of surgical procedures and has a full complement of imaging services, including CT, MRI and X-ray.

2023: Wise Health is now Medical City Healthcare

Wise Health System has officially become part of Medical City Healthcare, a division of HCA Healthcare. This partnership represents our strong commitment to ensuring the ongoing delivery of top-quality healthcare services. It aligns with our mission to enhance and transform lives in our evolving community for the next half-century and beyond.

As part of this transition, our WHS East campus will be rebranded as Medical City Decatur, a campus of Medical City Denton, while our two surgical hospitals will be renamed as Medical City Argyle, a Campus of Medical City Denton, and Medical City Surgical Hospital | Alliance, a Campus of Medical City Alliance. Additionally, the Wise Health Emergency Center will be known as Medical City ER | Argyle, a Department of Medical City Denton.
