Ceremony honors colleagues who saved coworker suffering stroke
McKinney, Texas — A year ago, Jada McClure was working as the administrative assistant to the CEO when she collapsed at her desk as the result of a stroke. Medical City McKinney is marking the one-year anniversary of her survival and raising awareness of stroke symptoms during American Stroke Month in a ceremony to honor the colleagues who came to McClure's aid.
On May 20, 2024, McClure had just arrived at work after a busy travel weekend when she thought she was developing a migraine headache. A colleague recognized that she looked unwell and reacted quickly by calling for help and then catching McClure when she lost consciousness. Her physician says her stroke was the result of a clot that developed during sedentary travel complicated by a history of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a type of heart rhythm disorder. Because of quick intervention, McClure recovered completely.
"I'm truly grateful for the life-saving care I received at Medical City McKinney," says McClure. "I'm proud to thank the quick-acting colleagues and incredible healthcare team who helped me during my recovery and to promote the importance of early recognition of stroke symptoms."
Experts say with early recognition, stroke is preventable, treatable and beatable. Medical City Healthcare, along with HCA Healthcare and the HCA Healthcare Foundation, is a partner in the American Heart Association's "Together to End Stroke" initiative.
Medical City Healthcare experts advise the community to act fast if they suspect a stroke. The acronym F.A.S.T. stands for:
- Face Drooping
- Arm Weakness
- Speech Difficulty
- Time to Call 9-1-1
On the week of her stroke, McClure will honor the hospital colleagues who recognized the stroke in process and those who were instrumental in her recovery. The ceremony will also provide an important opportunity for medical experts to share lifesaving information about stroke, especially as summer travel can elevate the risk.
