Medical City Lewisville offers community STOP THE BLEED® training
In observance of National STOP THE BLEED® Day on May 22, Medical City Lewisville is offering a free STOP THE BLEED community training session. The program empowers the public to learn simple bleeding control techniques that can save lives.
Uncontrolled bleeding from trauma is a significant cause of preventable death for people of all ages. Someone with a severe bleeding injury can bleed to death within minutes without proper intervention, according to the American College of Surgeons (ACS), which developed the STOP THE BLEED program. The hour-long course with hands-on training teaches people to recognize a severe bleeding injury and follow three simple steps after calling 911:
- Apply pressure with hands
- Pack the wound with gauze or clothing
- And/or apply a tourniquet.
“It’s important to us to train the community on life-saving actions that greatly improve the survival chances for people with severe bleeding,” says John Walker, Medical City Lewisville CEO. “We encourage anyone to take advantage of this important opportunity to be an equipped bystander during an emergency.”
The training will include a classroom portion and then each participant will practice a checklist of hands-on skills, assisted by Medical City Lewisville’s trauma team who are STOP THE BLEED-trained educators. Colleagues are committed to advancing care beyond the hospital walls through education and outreach.
Medical City Lewisville is a Level III Trauma Center and has medical experts specially trained to provide treatment and care for severely injured patients. The hospital managed more than 44,000 emergency room visits in 2024.
Community members can register online for the May 22 STOP THE BLEED training at Medical City Lewisville from 2 – 3 p.m. by visiting the Medical City Lewisville Stop the Bleed training event page.
