Plano, TX — Heavy duty vehicles are assembling and fencing is going up in advance of major construction starting this month to expand one of the patient towers at Medical City Plano. The expansion is necessary to meet the growing North Texas population’s need for high-level emergency, medical, surgical and oncology care.

The $108 million project will add more than 131,700 square feet to accommodate additional patient beds for intensive and other advanced care programs. Enhancements include:

  • 60 additional beds for medical and surgical patients
  • 4-story vertical expansion
  • 3 rooftop helipads with EMS support space
  • Shell space to accommodate future additional beds

The addition of the three rooftop helipads with EMS support space will strengthen the hospital’s ability to receive and treat patients quickly, particularly in emergencies or disasters involving multiple patients. Medical City Plano currently has three ground-level helipads.

“Since opening in 1975, Medical City Plano has been the destination of choice for healthcare excellence in Collin County and beyond,” says Ben Coogan, CEO of Medical City Plano. “This vital and exciting growth will positively expand our system of care, enabling us to treat more patients with complex conditions close to home.”

The hospital tower first opened in 2019 to serve patients with serious and life-threatening conditions, including those in the burn ICU, trauma ICU and Sarah Cannon Cancer Hospital oncology units. Additionally, this expansion will create new jobs, both during construction and after completion, contributing to local employment and economic growth. Medical City Plano is a leading employer in Collin County with more than 2,400 staff and 1,800 physicians.

The construction, projected to finish in 2026, is part of an unprecedented era of growth for Medical City Healthcare, which opened Medical City Mental Health & Wellness Center | Alliance in February. Over five years, Medical City Healthcare has invested more than $1.7 billion in capital improvements, including building acquisitions and expansions, facility enhancements and leading-edge technology.
