Medical City Plano celebrated a major construction milestone this month with a topping-out ceremony of the hospital’s vertical expansion to its Sarah Cannon Cancer Hospital patient tower.

The $108 million project will expand the hospital’s footprint by 131,700 square feet. It is expected to be complete in Spring 2027. The expansion includes:

  • Four additional stories
  • Relocation of the ground helipads to the roof
  • 90 additional patient beds

The project will increase capacity in the hospital’s medical-surgical and surgical stepdown units, ensuring more patients can receive the compassionate, high-quality care they need. Additionally, as Collin County’s only Level I Trauma Center, the helipads’ relocation to the roof will enable first responders faster, more direct access to the operating room and strengthen the hospital’s ability to receive and treat patients quickly, particularly in emergencies or disasters involving multiple trauma and burn patients.

“Achieving this milestone reflects our ongoing commitment to advancing the future of healthcare in North Texas. Every phase of this project is designed to bring leading‑edge technology, modern clinical environments and enhanced capabilities to our patients and caregivers,” says Ben Coogan, CEO of Medical City Plano. “This project is one of the most significant expansions in our hospital’s 50-year history, and we are proud of the progress this transformative investment will have on our patients and community.”

This expansion project is one of several significant investments in the community at Medical City Plano. A $25.8 million renovation of the hospital’s ancillary support areas including environmental services, supply chain, laboratory and food and nutrition kitchen is expected to complete this Fall. These expansion projects are part of Medical City Healthcare's major capital investment initiative of more than $1.5 billion in capital improvements, spent over five years across the Medical City Healthcare system.
