Medical City Plano celebrates 50 years, many firsts
Plano, TX — Medical City Plano celebrated a half-century of caring for its community with a reception on May 15 for colleagues, community leaders and partners. In honor of the occasion, the hospital also made a $25,000 donation to Collin College Foundation in support of health science careers.
In addition, The City of Plano presented a proclamation in recognition of the half century of life-saving care. Colleagues submitted their own memories or advice for future hospital caregivers that will be placed into a Medical City Plano time capsule.
“We are proud to honor the history of our outstanding hospital, the destination of choice for healthcare excellence in Collin County,” says Ben Coogan, CEO of Medical City Plano. “We are also delighted to mark this occasion by highlighting the hospital’s support for our community through donations, sponsorships and involvement such as the Collin College Foundation - which is helping support the next generation of healthcare professionals. This is another reflection of our legacy of caring like family for our friends and neighbors.”
Since the hospital’s founding in 1975 as Plano General Hospital, it has grown from its original 66 patient beds to the largest hospital in Collin County with 603 beds staffed by a medical team of 1,800 physicians with 70 specialties. In 2024, Medical City Plano delivered 2,800 babies and had more than 53,000 emergency room visits.
Numerous services, buildings and facilities have been added over the years as the hospital has continued enhancing its systems of care to better serve the community. These additions have included major Collin County “firsts” including:
- First and only Level I Trauma Center
- First and only Burn and Reconstructive Center
